How I Write Content for Top Tech Companies

Content marketing is the focal point of most tech major tech companies’ marketing strategies. I promise.

How do I know for sure? First, I used to work on the marketing team at HubSpot, the originators of the inbound marketing strategy. Second, I now write content for tech companies like HubSpot and Owl Labs (that’s seen by millions of viewers) at CXD Studio, my marketing and graphic design business. I’ve written hundreds of thousands of words of content and learned a few things along the way.

I wanted to share a few thoughts for any aspiring freelance writers, tech bloggers, or content marketers.

My first thought — content marketing works. It’s an organic, low-cost way for companies to get their brand out there and connect with people online.

What is content marketing & why do we care so much about business blogging?

I get this question all the time. Here’s my pitch on content marketing:

Companies create helpful, search engine optimized blog content about their industry, product, or service. When interested consumers search for information, they find content on Google, and go to the page that best answers their problem.

Content marketing brings consumers to you when they’re ready to buy, and makes them fall in love with your brand right off the bat (because you helped them solve a problem!)

Content marketing includes blog posts, ebooks, website pages, landing pages, kits, templates, offers, social media posts, videos, tutorials, and anything else a person browsing the web can read, watch, listen to, experience, or consume in any way.

How I write effective content for tech companies

Here’s my foolproof process to creating search engine optimized, readable, helpful content for both tech and other businesses.

  1. Start every post off with quick keyword research, even if I was given keywords to target.
  2. Ditch the formality, write in a helpful but casual tone.
  3. Link to helpful resources from the client and their partners.
  4. Include images with optimized alt text, image titles, and links.
  5. Start with an outline, writing H1, H2, and H3 headers first.
  6. Use up-to-date references, sources, and data.
  7. Always be thinking of new ideas and pitching them to clients.

The more you write, the better, and faster you get. Recently, I’ve seen some people who were new to blogging offering up their writing services on #girlboss just in exchange for exposure and edits. I love the hustle! That’s an incredible way to hone your skills, see the edits that someone makes, and expand your network as a freelance writer.

One of the best ways to get better at writing is to step out of your comfort zone and take on challenges of topics you don’t know much about. The skill of being able to learn about a new subject quickly, find and flag good resources, and produce quality content is valuable and can be implemented in other parts of your life and career.
